St Monan's Windmill and Salt Pans

St Monan's Windmill and Salt Pans

The Salt Mill at St Monans was used to pump seawater into the pans. Once full, the coal was fired and the heat evaporated off the water leaving the valuable white crystals behind. It was an intensive process, as to produce one ton of salt took almost 32 tone of seawater.

The St Monans windmill stands as one of the few reminders of an industry which was once the main source of employment for the whole area.

Newark Castle

Newark Castle

Located on the Fife Coastal Path around half a mile South West of St Monans, the ruins of the castle stand tall on the cliffs and are easily located.  The ruins of Ardross Castle can be found a little under a mile further along the coastal path.
